Ray Jean Batts, 95, of Frankfort, Indiana went to be with the Lord on September 15, 2018 at E.T. York Hospice, Gainesville, FL.  He was born in Boone County on December 3, 1922 and graduated from Jackson Township High School in 1942.  He is a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.  He served in the United States Army in Both WWII and the Korean Conflict.  Returning to Frankfort, he worked for the U.S. Post Office where he eventually became the Number 1 mail carrier.  He was a dedicated Red Cross blood donor giving over 28 gallons, making him one of the top five donors in Clinton County.  Ray Jean also worked, in retirement, for Sparrow Florist, Frankfort Medical Supply and Kraft Music Store.  He moved to Gainesville, FL in 2014.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene or by donating blood to the American Red Cross.

Visitation and Services

A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at the First Church of the Nazarene, 2056 East Wabash Street, Frankfort.  Friends may visit 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at Archer-Weston Funeral & Cremation Center, 501 East Clinton Street, Frankfort. 

Survived by:

He is survived by his brother Rayburn Batts of Frankfort, IN and Daughters:  Shirley (Carl) Romey of Gainsville, FL and Nancy Batts of Winter Park, FL.  Also surviving are two grandchildren:  Curtis (Amanda) Romey of Bartow, FL and Valerie Romey of Gainesville, FL along with eight great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lula and Otis Batts and his wife of 60 years, Clara Ann Lipp Batts.

    Carl, Shirley, and Nancy,
    I am so sorry for you. I know no matter how prepared you are, it still hurts very much to lose your father. You do have the peace of God to bring you through this. Know that we love you and are praying for you. I am sorry that we won’t be able to attend the funeral, but our prayers will be with you.

    In my book “Now I’ve Learned My ABCs” I wrote after her passing that I had a certainty Clara Ann Batts’ green beans would be served at the Great Banquet Table in heaven. If that is true, then I must believe that those green beans will be grown in a garden tended by Ray Jean himself. It is a calming and settling thought for me as I think about the passing of a long-time friend and surrogate grandparent. Blessings on the Batts family today, particularly Nancy, Shirley & Carl, whom I grew up with. Citizens of Heaven, get ready—there’s about to be a bumper crop.

    My heartfelt condolences to Ray Jean’s loved ones. He and his wife, Clara Ann we’re dear friends with my parents, Herb and Norma Howe. Ray Jean always had a smile for everyone he would meet.     To the entire Batts family, I am sadden by the news of Ray Jean’s passing. I worked with Ray Jean for several years at the post office, and I can honestly say that I have never met a more gentle or genuine person.

    Dear Family , I sure do hate to hear this ! Mr. Batts is 1 of my childhood memories that I have to this day, he was our mailman & we enjoyed it when he came around ! I have thought about him many times over the years, he was a very kind man ! I’m 66 now & live in Tn. I’m sure I will still think of him often, I have alot of fond memories of my childhood and he will always be part of that ! Sincerely , Deborrah Burgess

    I was so sorry to read of your dad’s passing. He was our mail carrier on south Jackson Street for many years. He was always so pleasant and never failed to share a smile and a kind word. Lifting you all in prayer!
